The state of the world continues to turn and winter is coming early to many places. What is this global warming/cooling/warming/cooling? For sure it will be a cycle and probably won’t come in this writers’ lifetime, but the responsibility is ours nonetheless. So our family is planning an Earth ship hybrid modern country home combination. Choice places are Tennessee, Colorado or Washington State.
Many of the customized systems of normal Earth ships are beyond our budget and beyond our understanding self cleaning water systems and thermodynamic heating. But it seems to be reasonable that we can draw upon resources in the area to build a more green energy consuming house. Maybe use the sand filled tire technique for partial insulation, recycled doors, windows, floor material, and cabinets from abandoned buildings for decoration, and a lot of plants for oxygen and food production. Solar is the biggest investment but well worth the cost. Importing solar supplies from China directly is the best method if you know anything about China. It’s well worth the research.
So I can see the Mediterranean house in my mind- situated into the side of a hill, 2 story with skylights, mosaic pillars, and a lot of arched windows. A basement game room, large fireplace, big gazebo for grilling and a nice size greenhouse for growing. A big 3 car garage- part mosaic studio and part husband’s tool area, plus a food storage room and mega freezer. What more could anyone want?
Sure, it takes money, but everything takes money nowadays. Even the air is expensive. But what is life without a goal? Those of us who are not spring chickens anymore can afford to go outside the norms of society and make something spectacular.
The German architect Hundertwasser believed that man should break away from the concrete squares of this age and personalize his space. Why should our families fit into established molds instead of making a mold that fits our family?
You can laugh at these people who go out into the desert and make something from nothing, recycle even their bathroom water and live off of the grid. But there are even Earth ships in Florida now and they’re springing up in a new housing revolution. Just as people living in autos, train containers, spheres, old factories, and tents on the streets. It’s a grand race to see what new innovations will appear as money is tight, resources are many and ingenuity and creativity are the jewels in our pockets to spend. What will you do with yours?
